OK...what's the hitch? How do you sell a gauge with more features and a longer warranty for about 1/2 the price of your competition? Why do you sell the FS 502 at such a great price? Here's the story. Five years ago we got into the paint meter business by accident. I was buying cars in the snow and sleet in Michigan and realized that I needed a paint thickness gauge. I looked at all the gauges on the market and was shocked at the prices. A basic "Orange" gauge was $700. I looked some more and found a German Company that offered a better gauge for less money...but it was still way too much money. Then... I Discovered Two Key Facts That You Need To Know... 1. The Instrument Industry is very old fashioned. They have always sold at extremely high margins. They actually have what you might call a "good ole boys network." They get fat and the buyer pays a premium. Many of these companies are headquartered in Europe where they have very high labor costs...which you pay! 2. The distribution networks are expensive and old fashioned. All of the big man ufacturers attend multiple trade shows every year. These shows are extremely expensive and they build the cost of these trade shows into the price of their gauge. You pay again! The majority of the gauges are built in Europe and then sold to the American Headquarters at a hefty profit. You pay this mark up. Almost all of the manufacturers re-sell through distributors who expect to make about a 30-40% margin. You pay for this too!
After 3 years in the business we decided to manufacturer our own gauges and sell them directly to the end user. We realized that we could cut many layers of profit out of the price of a thickness meter. We also knew that we could sell directly on the Internet and cut our cost of sales drastically.
